EV's hit 26% of BMW Australia's new car sales
ONE in FOUR new BMW’s sold in Australia, so far, in 2025 are pure electric. – that’s right 26% now of new BMW’s are EV’s – surprised, we were?
Sure BMW is on top of the “premium” car market in Australia in 2025, with over 5,628 vehicles of all types delivered so far in 2025.
But what is less know, BMW, the “sporty” luxury brand in Australia, has been quietly building dominance over traditional rivals Mercedes and Audi in the last couple of years, and also without much fanfare, is now selling a quarter of all new cars as Electric Vehicles.
So far in 2025 -Small SUV’s like the iX1 has sold 416, iX2 320 and the i4 309 sales, all in the top 11 selling EV’s so far in 2025.
Even the i4 sedan is in at 13th spot in Australia’s EV sales charts for 2025, with 309 sales and, the incredible i5 sedan has sold 195 putting it a 23rd spot.
Further down the list and even 96 iX’s have been sold and 7 of the luxury electric limo i7 have gone to new owners in Australia.
Clearly, while smaller SUV’s are leading the charge, BMW have got every market segment covered.
It's the same EV story for BMW around the world
BMW’s success with EV’s here in Australia reflects the Group’s worldwide numbers. 17.4% of BMW’s total sales worldwide in 2024 were pure EV. And don’t forget that the BMW group includes Mini and Rolls Royce, two brands with very fine EV’s indeed.
So I’d say BMW have gotten very good at embracing Electric Vehicle technology with some amazing cars, wouldn’t you?
BMW Australia used words to describe this success like “This milestone highlights the growing demand for sustainable mobility”
I’d say this success is due to least three factors: the loyalty of the BMW owners, who have proved they have an appetite for EV’s with a BMW badge on them.
BMW still build great cars, even with EV power and, thirdly, with a few exceptions, they have not diverted too far away from the BMW look. These EV’s look like BMW’s, and that’s a good thing!
BMW is about to change everything with the Neue Klasse
Of course there have been a few exceptions which have rocked a few opinions, but sales and resale values soon send BMW a clear message about what their buyers want.
Or do they?
Because while BMW has had great success and appears to be extracting maximum synergy between the BMW brand and EV power with BMW looking cars, they are about to challenge everything they stand for and reinvent the entire BMW look with the Neue Klasse.
That’s definitely To pronounce “Neue Klasse” in German, say “NOI-uh KLAS-uh” (or “NOI-uh KLAS-uh”). The “e” in “Neue” is pronounced as “OI” and the “Klasse” is pronounced as “KLAS-uh”.
You could not have missed BMW teasing the Neue Klasse, – simple translation New Class, new sedan’s and SUV’s with a totally new look and design language, a complete reinvention of the BMW style.
This is not the first time BMW have unveiled a Neue Klasse –from 1962 the BMW 1500, with it’s M10 engine literally saved the company from collapse, and started BMW’s golden era of success.
And remember, or maybe forget, the last reinvention of BMW design, the Bangle era – 1992 – 2009, Chris Bangle was the head designer, with his signature flamed surfaces and bangle butt – but come on, let’s not ruin things!
But the 2025 Neue Klass is also very bold, it’s futuristic and it’s already split some opinions. Let’s hope it take all those loyal BMW drivers and plenty of new EV buyers along for the ride for the next decade.
