Tesla is the highest selling used EV in Australia
Take a guess what the highest selling used EV in Australia is right now. If you guessed the Tesla Model 3, sorry no prizes for being right, just yet. But what do you think is number 2 selling used EV so far in 2025?
But first the good news, with more EV’s on the road, over 300,000 now, used EV sales are on the up in 2025. Up from Feb 2024 and up from recent months late last year. Up a wopping 73% from this time last year, and up 11%, from 1918 to 2137 EV’s, from Jan to Feb 2025. So used EV’s are a thing!
And believe it not, even in this current climate Tesla Model 3 is the biggest selling used EV, with over 266 sales for Feb 2025, up 31% from January -are they selling because of you know who, well, don’t forget, for for every seller there is a keen buyer!
And remember over 60,000 Model 3’s on the road in Australia, not bad for 6 years of sales.
All this while the Model Y has been Tesla’s best seller the last couple of year (and still is), but it’s not the second highest used EV trading at the moment.
That honour goes to the MG4 with 219 sales in Feb – maybe with the new model coming, maybe it’s just not what the drivers are looking for, despite being one of the cheapest offerings in Australia.
All this thanks to this summary from a recent article by Bruce Newton from EV Central, and the data itself is compiled by a research company call Autograb, who keep track of over 2million used car sales (all cars, not just EV’s) in Australia each year for the AADA (that’s the Australian Automotive Dealers Association.
Clearance rates however are still on the lowish side, with over 6100 cars offered for sale, a third were sold in Feb, but this is up from January so things are looking better for 2025.
Yes, used EV depreciation is still higher, as we all know. A three year old EV on average is 66% of it’s original value, V 80% for the rest of the market.
But with EV’s still only 1% of the overall used car market, the outlook for used EV can only be up!
