What the F#*K is a Frunk

What do you call a Boot (or Trunk if you're from the USA) in the front of a car?

A Froot, or Frunk of course.

There are many famous car designs with a boot (trunk) in the front – VW Beetle, Porsche 911, ring any bells.  So, with Electric Vehicles having a lot more space generally, and particularly up front, suddenly the Frunk or Froot has made a comeback.

But what is a Frunk – Do I need to explain the derivation of Frunk or Froot, just think FRont trUNK, or FRont bOOT !  Don’t take my word for it, ask Merriam Webster.

But, that’s not the only thing making a comeback in EV’s, here’s three things that were a good idea then, and are still a good idea now.

Frunk/Froot

Whatever you call it, and some can’t, still preferring Front Boot, or Front Trunk, it’s damn useful. Some, like the front of the new Ford Lightning, have taken it to the extreme and you could almost live in it’s Frunk. Others have gone shy, sealing up the front to hide all their technical secrets. But for those EV models that provide their owners with a Frunk (Froot), it’s very useful.

Wheel Covers (Hub Caps)

Yes, they were big from the 50’s (and before) to the 80’s, then they got a bit of a bad reputation and alloy’s went mainstream, more prestigious. Back then they were known as Hub caps but now there wheel covers, or aero aids. Who would have thought one of the biggest EV sellers in the world would have such success with what is now a genuine aerodynamic aid, what we know more generically as Wheel Covers.

Central Display

What a radical move Tesla made when they introduced the central nav and infotainment screen in the Model 3 – really?

Way back, over 60 years ago in 1959 the Greek God of the car industry, Sir Alec Issignois, thought a central instrument binnacle would be an splendid idea. It was big, clear and simple to read. An no doubt cheap as It adapted easily to left and right hand drive. So for drivers, passengers and designers, it just worked.

Fast forward and what an outcry, when it was reintroduced again on EV’s. Well one EV in particular, without a dedicated drivers screen.

Like most good ideas, it’s been done before, and it has been done again because it was a good idea then, and it’s a good idea now.
