I'm the perfect candidate to buy the new Model Y!

I’m the perfect candidate to buy the new model Y, I’ve ownd one for 2 years, I love everything it, I love way Tesla does things, yes, still. I’m excited by new EV’s.  Surely, I’m the perfect candidate to go out and buy the new Model Y? Maybe you are too?  But I’m not! I haven’t put my order in?

So why haven’t, and more to the point he point, I don’t think twice before you do either. Because is not as obvious as I thought it was.  So let me tell you why I think the “new” Tesla Model Y is not the natural upgrade, after only two years of ownership and, why,  instead, grabbing yourself a bargain – a 1-2 year old original Model Y, used or the run out new from Tesla, could be a very smart idea.

Or if you own a Model Y, like me, maybe you’ll just keep it!

The new Model Y did not excite me like it should have

I admit I was a not as excited as I thought I’d be when I saw the new Model Y. Sure, it’s a “new” car, it was much anticipated, leaked, again and it looks like a very different car.  Perhaps the front style was a surprise, even though it shouldn’t be.

And it’s always a huge deal when a new Tesla drops, even though Tesla pretend it’s not – it just appears on Chinese and Australia websites one day in early Jan this year. No media release, no big Model Y day – just a new Tesla Model Y suddenly appears – the world’s biggest selling EV suddenly got replace.

They say, many of the old “issues” with the original are addressed with a new, with a tart up, new wheels, front and rear with future Tesla design cues, Model 3 style upgrade on the inside, better suspension and, they say they listened to customer feedback.  They brought back one stalk at least.

The original Model Y now has my heart

For me, the original Model Y, probably designed way back in 2015, was way ahead of it’s time.  Seeing it for the first time,  it definately was not love at first sight for me, in fact it took a long time to really appreciate MY Mark 1.

Mrs Amazing fell in love with the Tesla interior back in 2022 and that was that. Me, not so much.  But now I love my Mark 1’s shape, the eyes, the bum, and to me it has character, especially compared to the Mark 2.

Plenty will admire and appreciate the changes – but at this stage, I’m not one of them. A mid life exterior refresh is a bit like any facelift, hard to beat the original – and has to be done very carefully to get great results.

I’m sure the new frontal treatment will grow on me, but not just yet and while all design is “influenced” by something or someone, from Cybertruck to Zpeng G6, it’s full circle back to the ne Model Y.

And I will reserve final judgement till I see the car in front of me, but I can’t find a single photo that makes this union of two DRL bars and two panels look right – let me know in the comments below.

New 20 inch Helix 2.0 are similar to the original Model 3 wheels, no mediocre covers this time. But 20in wheels mean 20 inch tyres, gotta be more than the old 19’s – as you can see I’ve solved the wheel cover issue with these customised, 9 out of 10 thumbs up, aero look ones.

The Big changes

The Model Y, like most Tesla’s has had many versions and upgrades along the way, so this time there are no changes to the new Model Y motor or battery. No doubt there will be more to come, but no new life changing tech has seen any radical increase in range or power. With the old Model Y, I’ve got plenty of both, so I am happy.

I doubt we’ve reached peak Tesla motor and battery tech, but I think we have reached economical Tesla Tech. So at last, with a few million runs on the board (units sold) they can make these power plants and batteries at scale now, so time for some profit margin – no need to change if it’s working perfectly.   Slight improvements in speed and range are down to the more aerodynamic design!

Suspension has been improved, it needed to – to drive the MY Mk1, you need to hunt around for the smoothest Sydney roads, and steer clear of the dog tracks! Not easy sometimes.

Inside
Similar treatment to the new Model 3, new seats, new materials, rear screen and yes – and talk listening to customers with one ear, one Stalk is back!

Cost
Yes, it has a lot more features as standard now, but in Australia at least – all paint finished, no cost option, a choice of long range or standard rear wheel, in my opinion, one motor is more than enough – 99.9% of the time. Drive away in NSW Australia, AUD68799

Heart
But what’s really important here is I have grown to love my Tesla Model Y. Not the owner, not the company, but the car.
It was a big step forward, I was not ready but I dived anyway, and swam or drove to keep up. I jumped light years ahead from my old petrol car and would never go back.

But am I ready for the next step, yes and know – for now I’ve taken a massive step might sit this new Model Y out and see what’s round the corner. Maybe it’s a step to far for me just now, maybe after two years we have just gotten to know each other.

If I were in the market for a New Model Y right now I’d take advantage of the much cheaper, official MY run out stock, – 2025 build.  So why not lean into it – find yourself an excellent, low km, Model Y, barely run in, in almost brand new condition for 45-50k and you are grabbing yourself a bargain.

But if you already have ordered your – perhaps you are selling your old Model Y, or 3 and we’d love to help you sell that at our dedicated used EV marketplace, AmazingEV.com.au
